Revelation 2–3

The Seven Churches of Asia

Jesus sends seven letters to seven real churches along a circular mail route in the Roman province of Asia (western Turkey today). He knows each one exactly as it is — and calls every one to overcome.

The seven letters

Ephesus — orthodox and hardworking, but it left its first love (2:1–7)
Smyrna — poor yet rich, faithful through suffering (2:8–11)
Pergamum — faithful under pressure, yet tolerating false teaching (2:12–17)
Thyatira — loving and growing, yet compromising with immorality (2:18–29)
Sardis — a reputation for being alive, but nearly dead (3:1–6)
Philadelphia — little strength, yet faithful; an open door set before it (3:7–13)
Laodicea — lukewarm and self-satisfied, urged to let Christ in (3:14–22)

What the letters teach together

Christ knows each church — and each heart — completely.
Right belief can coexist with a cold heart; guard your first love.
Comfort and self-sufficiency can be more dangerous than persecution.
To every faithful overcomer, Christ promises a share in His victory.
