Your Adult Child’s Choices Are Not Proof That You Failed

What is true
A proverb describes how life generally goes; it does not guarantee how every life will go. And nearly the first thing Isaiah says is God describing His own experience as a parent — nourished, brought up, rebelled against. Perfect parenting has been tried. “The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father” — nor the father the son’s (Ezekiel 18:20).
Three steps you can take today
- Read Proverbs 22:6 as wisdom, not warranty — the way you already read every other proverb in the book.
- Do what the watching father did. Jesus chose an estranged parent as His picture of God — heaven considers your situation familiar, not shameful (Luke 15:20).
- Send one sentence. Not a letter, not a case — one text with no defense and no demand: love with the agenda removed.
